In 1993, Bredevoort came into being as the Dutch-German booktown.
In this year, after its mediaeval towncentre was restored to its
former glory, the first handful of bookshops opened their doors to
increasing numbers of visitors.
At the moment it boasts over 30 antique bookshops, artgalleries
and ateliers.
Over the last two decades, a number of booktowns have been
established in Europe. Booktowns are small towns in rural areas
with a distinctive historical past where antiquarian and second-hand
bookshops are concentrated. They have also proved to be an
attractive home base for many artisans working in the different
graphical trades.
Following the example of the other booktowns, Bredevoort established
itself as the Dutch-German European booktown in 1993.
Bredevoort Booktown is a cooperative initiative of Dutch and German
antiquarians and bookbinders. As a border-spanning project, it is
unique in Europe.
